“Viejos son los trapos” (“old are the rags”) is a Spanish saying used to argue that age does not mean uselessness, or to express that nothing should be thrown away. “Vieja es el agua” (“old is the water”) twists that saying with a simple gesture: it puts water where the rags used to be, and suddenly everything fits.

“The water we drink is millions of years old. It has been rain, glacier, aquifer, spring, clay water jug, the water your grandmother used to wash the floor. It is the oldest thing there is and still the most necessary. Old, and for that reason essential.”

The title is not just a play on words: it is the project’s statement of intent. Nothing is thrown away, everything circulates, the everyday has depth. The memory of water is not in history books but in the objects in our homes, in the gestures of our hands, in the sayings we repeat without thinking.

Trapillo (fabric yarn) comes from rags. And a rag had a life before it became trapillo: it was a beach T-shirt, a summer-nap sheet, a family tablecloth. It is a material that has already lived, that carries history on it. When you lay it on a loom, you are weaving with accumulated memory.

This project proposes looking at Benicàssim’s water landscape not as something external, but as a living system and an everyday memory that connects us. Through a large collective loom, we will weave the water cycle (from the Desert de les Palmes to the sea) using trapillo brought from our homes. It is an invitation to bring together science, art and popular knowledge, where the hands that weave and the voices of our elders meet to care for our liquid memory.
