Az-zulaiŷ seeks to recover the collective memory of the Andalusian and Manchegan diaspora in València through a choral reflection on the origin, territory and architecture of the Barrio del Cristo. Split between Aldaia and Quart de Poblet, the neighbourhood grew up around a brick factory during the Civil War and the early post-war years. Its inhabitants, migrants, had to build their homes illegally in less than a night to prevent them from being demolished. The Barrio represents a Spain whose protagonists we risk forgetting.

The project addresses the loss of collective memory in places marked by migration and self-building, and the disconnection between people and their shared history, which makes it hard to imagine inclusive and sustainable futures rooted in the identity of the place. To do so, it involves the neighbourhood in a choral process combining art, architecture, citizen science and Social Life Cycle Assessment. Through workshops reconstructing cartographic, oral and visual memory, an emotional map of the Barrio’s past, present and future is created, which will shape a house-monument built together with the residents in a single night, as homes were raised in the 1950s and 60s, and a final exhibition in València.

The monument will be made of glazed-clay toilet cisterns, extracted from the walls of the self-built houses and given new meaning as objects of beauty, just as the residents’ experiences will be turned into tiles. The project is rooted in the Barrio’s social fabric together with the Neighbours’ Association of Barrio del Cristo, the Mancomunidad, IES Beatriu Civera and the town councils of Aldaia and Quart de Poblet, and measures its social and environmental impact throughout the process.
