El Refugio Estival nace como respuesta urgente a los retos del calor extremo y a la recuperación del espacio público afectado por la DANA. Desde la afectividad, el ocio no consumista y la convivencia, el proyecto transforma una zona del Polideportivo Municipal en un refugio climático vivo, participativo y en constante evolución.
Esta residencia internacional, promovida por Placemaking Europe, reunió a un equipo multidisciplinar de arquitectura, ecología, arte y urbanismo táctico: Mimi Dearing, Estelle Jullian, Javier Molinero Domingo, Ximena Alexandra Fuentes y Francesco Caneschi. Durante varias semanas, el equipo co-diseñó, convivió con el territorio, analizó las condiciones microclimáticas y trabajó mano a mano con el personal técnico municipal, servicios locales y ciudadanía.
Proceso y transformación colectiva
Las transformaciones físicas cobraron vida como un ejercicio directo de construcción colectiva. Se realizaron talleres en las escuelas de verano del municipio y un laboratorio de imaginarios; se crearon un siestódromo y un umbrelarium; se plantó un jardín de especies aromáticas junto a la ciudadanía. Se reintervinieron estructuras históricas del parque para otorgarles un nuevo propósito: el antiguo skatepark se convirtió en un enorme arenero que alberga un dragón-serpiente-mesa-tobogán, y la pirámide de escalar se transformó en cabaña vegetal; el suelo del ágora se volvió un tablero de juego; las sombras de otros lugares vinieron a habitar los muros.Tras semanas de intenso trabajo a altas temperaturas, que reafirmaron la urgencia de estos espacios de tregua climática, una velada de apertura abierta a todo el pueblo —con una cena comunitaria al estilo tradicional del «pa i porta» y conciertos de grupos locales— sirvió para celebrar el nacimiento de este refugio: un espacio vivo y abierto que no concluye con su inauguración, sino que continúa evolucionando y creciendo de la mano de la ciudadanía que lo habita.
The Summer Refuge (Refugio Estival) emerges as an urgent response to the challenges of extreme heat and the recovery of public space affected by the DANA flood. Rooted in affect, non-consumerist leisure, and community life, the project transforms an area of the Municipal Sports Complex into a living, participatory, and ever-evolving climate shelter.
This international residency, promoted by Placemaking Europe, brought together a multidisciplinary team spanning architecture, ecology, art, and tactical urbanism: Mimi Dearing, Estelle Jullian, Javier Molinero Domingo, Ximena Alexandra Fuentes, and Francesco Caneschi. Over several weeks, the team co-designed, lived within the territory, analysed microclimatic conditions, and worked hand in hand with municipal technical staff, local services, and residents.
Process andcollective transformation
Physical transformations came to life through a direct exercise in collective building. Workshops were held in the town’s summer schools alongside an “imaginary laboratory”; a siestódromo (siesta zone) and an umbrelarium were created; and a garden of aromatic species was planted together with the community. Historic structures in the park were reinterpreted to serve a new purpose: the former skatepark became a vast sandpit housing a dragon-serpent-table-slide, while the climbing pyramid was transformed into a vegetal cabin; the ground of the agora became a game board; and shadows from other places came to inhabit the walls.After weeks of intense work under high temperatures—which reaffirmed the urgency of these spaces of climatic respite—an opening evening open to the entire town, featuring a community dinner in the traditional “pa i porta” style and concerts by local groups, celebrated the birth of this refuge: a living, open space that does not end with its inauguration, but continues to evolve and grow hand in hand with the community that inhabits it.
La cabaña vegetal: un paradigma del refugio
Una de las intervenciones fue la transformación de la pirámide de escalada, presente durante más de treinta años pero ya en desuso. Generaciones de niños y niñas habían trepado por ella; su presencia forma parte de la memoria afectiva del lugar. Por ello, el proyecto no buscó clausurar el acceso, sino reinterpretarlo para ofrecer nuevas formas de apropiación.
En la parte superior se instaló un jardín colgante, incorporando cestas con plantas resistentes a una fuerte exposición solar y plantas trepadoras, junto a un sistema de brumización para su riego. La parte inferior se recubrió con cañizo, generando un techo bajo, cercano al cuerpo infantil, que aprovecha la geometría compleja de la pirámide y permite imaginar varias cabañas en una sola estructura. Materiales comunes e imprecisos —bridas, cuerdas, cañizo— dialogan con una forma arquitectónica más rígida, acercando la instalación a la idea de una cabaña hecha por una misma: accesible, sencilla, honesta y abierta al uso colectivo.
En el suelo, cojines rellenos de paja de arroz invitan a componer un espacio propio de pausa y desconexión. La cabaña emerge así como un paradigma del refugio: una manifestación primaria del habitar, un espacio mínimo de supervivencia y un símbolo de lo esencial frente al acelerado ritmo contemporáneo.
De alguna manera adquiere un valor de objeto simbólico a múltiples escalas. Vista desde lejos, se manifiesta como una pieza escultórica singular; al acercarse, se descubre como un ecosistema vivo, habitado por el agua, los insectos y el crecimiento constante de las plantas; y al situarse debajo, se transforma en una atmósfera de sombra, frescor y descanso.
La construcción contó con la colaboración de la Escola Taller de Paiporta, vecinas y vecinos, en un proceso comunitario de cuidado, reparación y reimaginación del espacio público.

The vegetal cabin: a paradigm of refuge
One of the interventions was the transformation of the climbing pyramid, present for over thirty years but no longer in use. Generations of children had climbed it; its presence is part of the place’s affective memory. For this reason, the project did not seek to close off access, but to reinterpret it, offering new forms of appropriation.
At the top, a hanging garden was installed, incorporating baskets with sun-resistant plants and climbing vines, along with a misting system for irrigation. The lower part was covered with reed matting (cañizo), creating a low ceiling close to children’s height, which takes advantage of the pyramid’s complex geometry and allows for imagining multiple cabins within a single structure. Common, imprecise materials—cable ties, ropes, reed matting—enter into dialogue with a more rigid architectural form, bringing the installation closer to the idea of a self-made cabin: accessible, simple, honest, and open to collective use.
On the ground, cushions filled with rice straw invite visitors to compose their own space for pause and disconnection. Thus, the cabin emerges as a paradigm of refuge: a primary manifestation of dwelling, a minimal space for survival, and a symbol of the essential in the face of today’s accelerated pace.
In a way, it acquires value as a symbolic object on multiple scales. Seen from afar, it appears as a singular sculptural piece; up close, it reveals itself as a living ecosystem, inhabited by water, insects, and the constant growth of plants; and from beneath, it transforms into an atmosphere of shade, coolness, and rest.
The construction was carried out in collaboration with the Escola Taller de Paiporta and local residents, in a community process of care, repair, and reimagining of public space.
