The Summer Refuge (Refugio Estival) emerges as an urgent response to the challenges of extreme heat and the recovery of public space affected by the DANA flood. Rooted in affect, non-consumerist leisure, and community life, the project transforms an area of the Municipal Sports Complex into a living, participatory, and ever-evolving climate shelter.

This international residency, promoted by Placemaking Europe, brought together a multidisciplinary team spanning architecture, ecology, art, and tactical urbanism: Mimi Dearing, Estelle Jullian, Javier Molinero Domingo, Ximena Alexandra Fuentes, and Francesco Caneschi. Over several weeks, the team co-designed, lived within the territory, analysed microclimatic conditions, and worked hand in hand with municipal technical staff, local services, and residents.

Process andcollective transformation
Physical transformations came to life through a direct exercise in collective building. Workshops were held in the town’s summer schools alongside an “imaginary laboratory”; a siestódromo (siesta zone) and an umbrelarium were created; and a garden of aromatic species was planted together with the community. Historic structures in the park were reinterpreted to serve a new purpose: the former skatepark became a vast sandpit housing a dragon-serpent-table-slide, while the climbing pyramid was transformed into a vegetal cabin; the ground of the agora became a game board; and shadows from other places came to inhabit the walls.

After weeks of intense work under high temperatures—which reaffirmed the urgency of these spaces of climatic respite—an opening evening open to the entire town, featuring a community dinner in the traditional “pa i porta” style and concerts by local groups, celebrated the birth of this refuge: a living, open space that does not end with its inauguration, but continues to evolve and grow hand in hand with the community that inhabits it.

The vegetal cabin: a paradigm of refuge
One of the interventions was the transformation of the climbing pyramid, present for over thirty years but no longer in use. Generations of children had climbed it; its presence is part of the place’s affective memory. For this reason, the project did not seek to close off access, but to reinterpret it, offering new forms of appropriation.

At the top, a hanging garden was installed, incorporating baskets with sun-resistant plants and climbing vines, along with a misting system for irrigation. The lower part was covered with reed matting (cañizo), creating a low ceiling close to children’s height, which takes advantage of the pyramid’s complex geometry and allows for imagining multiple cabins within a single structure. Common, imprecise materials—cable ties, ropes, reed matting—enter into dialogue with a more rigid architectural form, bringing the installation closer to the idea of a self-made cabin: accessible, simple, honest, and open to collective use.

On the ground, cushions filled with rice straw invite visitors to compose their own space for pause and disconnection. Thus, the cabin emerges as a paradigm of refuge: a primary manifestation of dwelling, a minimal space for survival, and a symbol of the essential in the face of today’s accelerated pace.

In a way, it acquires value as a symbolic object on multiple scales. Seen from afar, it appears as a singular sculptural piece; up close, it reveals itself as a living ecosystem, inhabited by water, insects, and the constant growth of plants; and from beneath, it transforms into an atmosphere of shade, coolness, and rest.

The construction was carried out in collaboration with the Escola Taller de Paiporta and local residents, in a community process of care, repair, and reimagining of public space.

This project integrates popular knowledge, rural and urban landscape practices, local cultural expressions and emblematic elements such as ceramics, viticulture and music. Inspired by the rituals of the zambombas, it seeks to open spaces for reflection on contemporary challenges such as climate adaptation, energy transition and landscape transformation.
To this end, the creative actions use local materials such as albariza, vines or vine residues and refer to practices rooted in the place. By adopting context-sensitive practices, SONE collaborates closely with communities and their cultural expressions, exploring new trends in their relationship with the landscape.
SONE proposes a participatory process in which local collectives contribute from the materiality of the ceramic object (the zambomba as an instrument), the ritual and lyrics (the zambomba as an event and repertoire), to the renaturalization (bowering). In this way, not only reflection is encouraged, but also action: the intervention of public space through nature-based solutions (SbN) that take advantage of the know-how and tradition of vine trellising as a climatic improvement device.

“Pardal Blau(Blue bird) exploration of the cyclical and the coexistence between species”. is a co-creation workshop with a focus on investigating and addressing notions of the cyclical in habitat construction and environmental care, as well as the use of plant materials and agricultural waste. The workshop incorporates concepts of seasonality and migration(1) linked to the Mediterranean to inspire the co-creation of inter-species hospitality and coexistence devices. This approach focuses on the bioregion and promotes reflection on human and bird migratory flows, integrating inter-species coexistence as the central axis of its proposal.

The workshop sessions are structured in lecture-discussions with interventions by external agents, such as the ornithologist Antonio Bañuls Patiño, local coordinator of Seo BirdLife Alacant, followed by co-design spaces, allowing a participatory and reflective exchange.

(1) The workshop is named “Pardal Blau” in reference to the seasonal migration of people from the rural areas of Alicante to Algeria at the end of the 19th century, which was known as the migration of the swallow, called “pardal blau” in Valencian. This seasonal migration, documented in the book “Els calencians d'Algèria (1830-1962)” by Àngela-Rosa Menages and Joan-Lluís Monjo Mascaró (Edicions del Bullent), as well as the artist's own family history have served as inspiration for the theme and approach of the workshop.

This workshop / performance is an artistic project aimed at teacher training students in which the oral heritage associated with the history of schools in rural areas of the counties of Castellón is put in value. The theme of the workshop focuses on school routes, addressing aspects such as the journey from home to school, distances, inside and outside. The workshop took place over two days, with two different groups visiting two different rural schools, with a first walk of 18 km round trip and another of 8 km round trip.

The dynamics of the workshop promoted the active participation of the students, who had to bring a string with the length of the route from their home to the school and draw the plan of this route. During the walk, the group of participants developed the threads to the school they were going to visit and tied them, symbolizing the union of experiences and trajectories. Once at the school, a meeting was generated, the school was visited and experiences related to the preservation of memory and buildings were shared.
In the return, a thread composed of all those threads together was wound, symbolizing the joint compilation of experiences.
In addition, the workshop is part of other projects related to the rational and metric representation of sensory experiences. A personal project “28.7 km. The thread, the path”, consists of the installation of a linen thread wound on the column of a church atrium, the length of which represents a specific route. In addition, mention is made of other reference projects, such as Jason Dodge's, which follow similar principles of measurement and representation.

The workshop uses key concepts in its practice, such as synecdoche, which consists of giving a word a broader meaning than usual, and metonymy, which designates one concept with the name of another, using some existing relationship between them. These concepts play an important role in how experiences are approached and represented throughout the workshop, providing a semantic and narrative framework for interaction with the educational environment.
